Thief-Man Got Me Keeping Wake

At this hour of the morning my brother and uncles are on the road trying to catch a thief.

Year go year come is the same thing. If the damn thieves aren’t breaking into one of our shops then they’re shooting at us.

I’ve watched my mother’s eldest brother battle to keep his business afloat through three attacks. First it was cutlass bandits and then they graduated to guns.

As for one of her younger brothers, his screams tore us from sleep one night. Bandits were in his house, beating and terrorising him and his family.

Now, at 18 my brother has taken over my mother’s shop. And guess what? You guessed it, gunmen have already attacked him. They’ve broken in and stolen and now tonight they’ve done it again.

All the men in my family have tried to do is make an honest living.

Sure, there are worse places on earth. But the fact of the matter is that Guyana is home and home should be safe.

Sharing a quick moment with you while I’m on the go.
Sara.
